Role: Associate .NET Consultant

Capability: Microsoft Solutions

Meet Sue, with a positive and open mind, who is not afraid of trying new experiences. Sue’s background is a little unorthodox having started out in science studying physics and maths physics, switched to classical music, studied solo classical piano performance for undergraduate, and musicology for postgraduate.

‘’Taught as a piano tutor for several years in private music schools but grew tired of doing the same thing day in day out (If I had to listen to Mary had a little lamb one more time I’d crack up).’’

Sue felt the need to broaden her horizons and she began researching different career paths and was struck by the diversity of the jobs within the IT sector.

‘’I talked to some friends within IT and decided to give up the musical keyboard in favour of the computer keyboard, and started a conversion course in Software development’’

Less than a year later Sue found herself starting as an intern on the Associate Consultant programme at Version 1 and began working as a .Net developer for one of the teams in Kent. Since then Sue has worked on three projects for one of Version 1’s key clients and works remotely in Dublin.

‘’I’ve learned something new every day since I’ve started in the company. The team have been a constant support in my learning and are always there to answer questions. It’s a big difference from what I was saying about my job just over a year ago’’

‘’Version 1 focuses on learning and personal development- I did three exams to get a Microsoft certification in software development last year.’’

Sue also enjoys the social aspect that Version 1 has to offer – it’s not all work and no play.

‘’I’ve found a new way to engage with both music and colleagues through the Version 1 choir. It doesn’t matter if you’re a senior manager or if you’re a new starter fresh off the Associate Consultant programme-everyone is at the same level in choir. We’re like a little family! It’s great craic and gives you a feeling of togetherness and belonging-we all encourage each other as we learn’’

Any advice for the next generation

‘’Be yourself, be driven, be willing to learn and to try something new’’
